History
The Tietê Bus Terminal was inaugurated on 8 May 1982, by the then governor Paulo Maluf. The largest bus terminal in Latin America is situated on grounds of 120,000 m2 and occupies a built up area of 54,480 m2.
This terminal functions 24 hours a day and attends 21 states ; 7 regions (north, northwest, the south of the country, interior and north coast of São Paulo, the coast of Rio de Janeiro and the coast of Espirito Santos); and four countries in Latin America: Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. From the Tietê there also leaves special line to the Guarulhos International Airport and the traditional luxury Express to Santos.
The Terminal has 65 bus companies, 127 ticket windows, and 304 bus lines, that attend 1,010 cities. For this are used 70 embarkation platforms and 19 for disembarkation. On days with the greatest movement, according to necessities, these platforms become reversible. The buses also have a waiting area, that has a capacity for 70 buses (popularly known as the Mangueirão).
To maintain the operation, security and cleanliness of the Tietê Terminal, Socicam has around 420 employees, divided into three shifts.
Historical Data
The design of the Tietê Terminal, signed by the architect Renato Viegas and by the engineer Roberto MacSaden, began to be developed in 1978.
The building considered an urban landmark for Sao Paulo capital, with a modern style, was inaugurated in 1982, on the morning of 9 May. The event reunited more than 50 thousand people and dozens of authorities from the transport area and also the then governor Paulo Maluf.
According to the architect who signed the project, the Tietê was designed within the operational standards established by the DNER and under the umbrella of a project called PITERP (Bus Terminal Integrated Project) which facilitated, by the presence of the metro station, access of the users to the center of the city.
The TRT was transferred to private initiative on the 2 January 1990 and since then it has been administrated by Socicam, who also manage the Barra Funda and Jabaquara terminals.
In April 2002, was started the biggest reform and revitalization that the Tietê Bus Terminal had seen since its construction. With an investment of R$ 14 million, made by the Consortium Prima – that administers, under concession from the Metro, the bus terminals of São Paulo - and their partners, the works concentrated on the waiting, business and food areas, which began to house well know brands, like Mr. Sheik, Café Donuts, Casa do Pão de Queijo, Bob's, Spolletto, amongst others. In the Shopping Area, the Tietê Terminal offers its users shops and kiosks of Le Postiche, Boticário, Tilt Arena, tobacconists, bookstand and bookshop, CD shops, pharmacy and presents, perfume shops, clothing and fashion shops; as well as service of the public interest, like a vaccination.
During the period from 1990 to 2006, the consortium responsible for management of the Sao Paulo Bus Terminals have invested more than R$ 106 millions in reforms and improvements to the areas.
